What is ELSA?

Here at Tutshill Primary School, we have a room dedicated to pastoral support which takes place every afternoon - Monday to Friday. We have carefully have created a safe base within school for our children to access emotional support.

We are a passionate team who have been working closely together providing pastoral support to our children here at Tutshill School since 2017. We started our journey together and have grown from strength to strength over the years, building a strong foundation to support our children and families.

Childhood can be a tricky time. Children face many challenges when they are growing up and some are more difficult to manage than others. We understand here at Tutshill Primary School, that every child’s experience is unique and believe that no child should feel alone in overcoming those obstacles. Through our robust pastoral provision, we work alongside our pupils’ families, aiming to build a strong support network for those children.

ELSA is an initiative developed and supported by educational psychologists. It recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

Mrs Beard is our qualified Emotional Literacy Support Assistant here at Tutshill Primary School. Mrs Beard has been trained by Educational Psychologists to plan and deliver programmes of support to pupils who are experiencing temporary or longer-term additional emotional needs. The majority of work is delivered in small groups where appropriate especially in areas of social and friendship skills; however it may be more effective to carry out sessions on 1:1 basis.  ELSA sessions provide a calm, safe space for children to feel supported, nurtured and listened to.

We provide support for a wide range of emotional needs:

  • Recognising and understanding emotions and feelings
  • Social skills
  • Friendship skills
  • Self esteem
  • Anger management
  • Anxiety
  • Attachment
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Relaxing techniques
  • Resilience
